A new, dispersible formulation of artemether-lumefantrine is as safe and effective as the currently used crushed tablet to treat infants and children with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum, according to research published online Oct. 15 in The Lancet.

Maraviroc -- one of a new class of drugs that bind to the human chemokine receptor 5 and interfere with viral replication -- may be an effective treatment for previously treated patients with R5 HIV-1 infection, according to two studies published in the Oct. 2 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The Human Influenza Virus Real-Time RT-PCR Detection and Characterization Panel -- a new test developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- received approval Sept. 30 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the diagnosis of seasonal human influenza infections as well as influenza A.
